Gail Schmidt knew when she was very young that she wanted to be an artist. But it wasn’t until 2009 that she decided to give painting a try. She found that this was a part of her that had been missing throughout her life. Schmidt has taken acrylic painting classes from a local Airdrie, Alberta art instructor, who has helped develop her skills and love of painting. Working with acrylics has been rewarding with the results of her paintings coming to life on canvas.
She spends time researching other artists to study their techniques and subject matter, while applying what she learns, and developing her own style. Schmidt has completed some commission pieces and has marketed her own paintings to local art collectors. She enjoys painting a variety of subjects, including portraits, farm landscapes, animals and that special vacation scene. While spending summers at their family farm in Saskatchewan, Schmidt developed a love of the farm and captures rural life and the hard working lifestyle. People are intriguing, and so it comes across in Schmidt’s portrait paintings. Whether it’s a commission painting of a family relative from Mexico or a close friend, Schmidt captures their true expression.
“I love painting because of the way it makes me feel. When I finish a piece, it gives me a feeling of pride, accomplishment and satisfaction. When it’s a commission piece, the feeling is even greater, knowing that the client Is very happy with the final product. Painting is my way of giving a part of me to share with others.”
